Mailchimp vs SendGrid: $318 or $239.40 a Year – Marketing or API?

Pick Mailchimp if marketers run campaigns from one dashboard, and SendGrid if your code sends the email. SendGrid's Email API Essentials costs $239.40 a year against $318 for Mailchimp Essentials at 1,000 contacts, though the two are different products.

Twilio says SendGrid processed an average of more than 183 billion emails a month in 2024.

The cheaper one is the one that bills the number you keep small. Mailchimp charges for the contacts on your list, while SendGrid charges for the emails you send, according to Transmit’s comparison. So a marketer with a newsletter pays for how many people signed up, and an app that emails receipts pays for every receipt it sends.

Which Platform Should You Choose? Mailchimp for Campaigns, SendGrid for App Email

Verdict: Mailchimp is a marketing suite for teams that write and schedule campaigns. SendGrid is an email API (application programming interface, the connection your code uses to send mail) built for developers. The deciding difference is who does the work: a marketer in a dashboard or an engineer in code.

Mailchimp’s flaw, and the fix: Transmit notes that contact-based pricing climbs quickly as a list grows, and Mailchimp’s pricing page warns: “Overages apply if contact or email send limit is exceeded.”

If that worries you, price MailerLite Comfort: $205.20 a year at 1,000 contacts with 10,000 emails a month, per MailerLite’s pricing page. That’s $1.71 per 1,000 emails against Mailchimp’s $1.77. For a second option, see Brevo vs Mailchimp at 10k contacts.

SendGrid’s flaw, and the fix: automation (emails that send on their own, such as a welcome series) comes only on SendGrid’s Advanced tier, per Email Software Insights. Advanced starts at $60 a month per Twilio, so $720 a year, or $402 more than Mailchimp Essentials at $318. If you need welcome or cart sequences, budget for Advanced, or use Mailchimp, where every paid plan includes automation.

Strengths: Mailchimp gives a non-technical team store integrations and automation with no developer needed. SendGrid gives developers cheaper sending per email and a written uptime promise.

Pick Mailchimp if a marketer runs email for a Shopify or WooCommerce store. Pick SendGrid if your app sends receipts, alerts or password resets.

Who should skip: a team with no developer should skip SendGrid and buy Mailchimp. A small, newsletter-only list should skip Mailchimp: MailerLite Comfort costs $205.20 a year at 1,000 contacts, $112.80 less than Mailchimp Essentials.

Mailchimp vs SendGrid at a Glance: SendGrid Is Cheaper Until You Need Automation

The marketing-plan rows compare like for like, at the same 15,000 emails a month. The API rows price sending only, which Mailchimp sells as a separate add-on. Prices are list prices shown in October 2026, with SendGrid’s monthly prices multiplied by 12.

Marketers Get One Dashboard, Developers Get an API

Mailchimp is built so a marketer never opens a code editor. Email Software Insights lists drag-and-drop design, visual automation, landing pages and SMS in one dashboard. One login covers the newsletter, the signup page and the text-message follow-up.

SendGrid starts from the other end. Transmit splits the two the same way: SendGrid for developers, Mailchimp for marketers. Your code calls SendGrid each time a customer does something that needs an email.

That second job is called transactional email: one-to-one messages set off by a customer’s action, such as an order receipt or a password reset. Campaigns go to a whole list. Transactional emails go to one person at a time.

SendGrid Costs $180 a Year vs Mailchimp’s $318, but $720 With Automation

Compare Mailchimp with SendGrid’s marketing plan, not its email API: the marketing plan is the one built for campaigns. Mailchimp Essentials costs $318 for 12 months at 1,000 contacts and includes 15,000 emails a month, per Mailchimp’s pricing page, as listed in October 2026.

SendGrid Marketing Campaigns Basic starts at $15 a month, or $180 a year, for 5,000 contacts and 15,000 emails, per Email Software Insights and Twilio. At the same 15,000 emails, that’s $1.00 per 1,000 emails against Mailchimp’s $1.77.

Automation flips the order. SendGrid’s Advanced tier starts at $60 a month, or $720 a year, per Twilio, which is $402 more than Mailchimp Essentials.

SendGrid’s Email API is a separate product: sending capacity your code calls. Email API Essentials starts at $19.95 a month for 50,000 to 100,000 emails, per Twilio’s SendGrid comparison page, as listed in October 2026. That works out to $239.40 a year.

Mailchimp’s bill follows your contact count (Transmit), so a growing list raises the price even if you send no more email. Price the list you expect next year, not the one you have today.

Mailchimp Wins Ecommerce With Native Shopify Flows

For a store, Mailchimp does more without a developer. Email Software Insights lists built-in Shopify and WooCommerce integrations, abandoned-cart emails and revenue tracking. A cart reminder goes out on its own, and you can see what each campaign earned.

Automation is Mailchimp’s second edge. Email Software Insights says every Mailchimp paid plan includes it, while SendGrid saves it for the Advanced tier at $720 a year, $402 more than Mailchimp Essentials (Twilio). If your store runs welcome series and cart flows, that gap matters more than the entry price.

If you still want SendGrid for a store, Transmit says SendGrid “assumes technical competence,” so check that someone on your team can build and edit your flows.

SendGrid Wins Transactional Email; Mailchimp Charges Extra for It

SendGrid treats transactional email as its main product, sent through its API or SMTP (the standard way mail servers pass messages along), according to Transmit. It runs at large scale: Twilio says SendGrid processed an average of more than 183 billion emails per month in 2024, per its comparison page.

The same Twilio page advertises a 99.95% uptime SLA (service level agreement, a written uptime promise). In plain terms, 43,200 minutes in a 30-day month × 0.05% = 21.6 minutes of allowed downtime. That’s about 4.4 hours a year.

Mailchimp’s flaw here: transactional email is a separate paid add-on called Mandrill, according to both Email Software Insights and Transmit. If your store needs receipts and shipping notices, price that add-on before you commit. Or send those messages through SendGrid and keep Mailchimp for campaigns.

Next step: If you’re leaning toward Mailchimp, compare it with one more suite before you pay: ConvertKit vs Mailchimp features, free plans and 12-month cost.

How We Evaluated

We compared the two on six points: how each one charges, 12-month entry price, cost per 1,000 emails, campaign and store tools, which plans include automation, and transactional sending with uptime. Prices come from vendor pages as listed in October 2026: Mailchimp’s pricing page, Twilio’s SendGrid page and MailerLite’s pricing page. Feature claims and the contact and email limits of SendGrid’s Marketing Campaigns Basic come from the comparisons by Transmit and Email Software Insights.

Next step: read more in Comparisons on MarketingRating, or check the figures in Email marketing pricing: the true 12-month cost at 1,000, 10,000 and 50,000 contacts.
