Email Marketing vs Advertising Agency: $497.04 to $4,200 Before Fees
An email marketing agency works on the subscribers you already own; an advertising agency rents reach on someone else's audience. Before any agency fee, the email platform itself costs $497.04 to $4,200 a year at 10,000 contacts.

Hire for the list you own, not the reach you rent. An email marketing agency works inside your email platform, on subscribers you already own. An advertising agency puts your offer in front of someone else’s audience, and some firms sell both. The platform has its own price, so check it against any agency quote.
At 10,000 contacts, the 12-month cost on the eight plans below runs from $497.04 (Brevo Starter, priced by email volume: 40,000 emails a month, assuming 4 sends per contact) to $4,200.
Email marketing agency vs email advertising company: one works your list, the other rents reach
Here “advertising agency” covers two forms of rented reach: paid ads, such as the pay-per-click and social media work StudioForty9 sells (next section), and email advertising. Email Vendor Selection describes email advertising as renting an email list, promotions in publications, or pushing content through publishers’ channels. In each of those, the audience belongs to someone else.
The same page says those skills often overlap with email acquisition companies, meaning the firms that sell list growth. So a quote labeled “email advertising” may really be a list-growth quote. Read the scope line by line.
An email marketing agency does the opposite job: it works on the list in your own account.
One question sorts any proposal. When the work is done, do you end up with new subscribers in your account, or with impressions on someone else’s list? The first is email marketing. The second is email advertising.
What agencies list as their services: platform work, paid ads and social can come from one firm
StudioForty9, an Irish agency on Omnisend’s list, offers email marketing for Klaviyo and Shopify. The same entry says it also sells pay-per-click advertising and social media marketing. So one firm can run both your email and your paid ads.
That can save you a second round of hiring. It also puts two budgets on one invoice. Ask for the email work and the ad spend as separate lines, so you can compare the email line with the tool bill below.
How to read ‘best email agency’ lists: agencies and platforms publish them, and Thrive ranks itself first
Check who wrote a ranking before you build a shortlist from it.
- Thrive Agency’s list of 15 email marketing companies puts Thrive itself at number 1. When an agency puts itself at the top, the list works as its sales page.
- The Thrive list was published January 9, 2026 and last updated September 18, 2026. Check the update date on any list before you rely on it.
- Omnisend’s list runs on the blog of an email platform, the same company whose prices appear in the table below. It repeats one agency’s claim of over $30 million in email revenue for clients. That figure is the agency’s own, and it is unverified.
Treat any list as a set of names to call. Ask each one which platforms it works in and who owns the accounts.
The platform bill beside any agency fee: 12-month cost at 10,000 contacts on eight plans runs $497.04 to $4,200
Ask whether an agency quote includes this bill. Each price below is 12 months at 10,000 contacts, from the vendor’s own pricing page, read 2026-10-20. The plans are different tiers: mostly entry tiers, plus Omnisend Pro and Mailchimp Premium because their pricing pages name setup help. The table compares the bill and any help the pricing row names, not features.
A dash means this site’s pricing row names no setup help, so check the vendor’s page before you rule a tool out.
| Plan (vendor pricing page) | 12 months at 10,000 contacts | Help included, per the pricing page |
|---|---|---|
| Brevo Starter | $497.04 (priced by email volume: 40,000 emails a month, 4 sends per contact) | — |
| MailerLite Comfort | $961.20 | — |
| Mailchimp Essentials | $1,320 | — |
| Beehiiv Lite | $1,428 | — |
| ActiveCampaign Starter | $1,788 | — |
| Klaviyo Email | $1,800 | — |
| Omnisend Pro | $1,800 | Omnisend offer, not a Pro feature: free 5-day migration of flows, lists and templates; 24/7 support |
| Mailchimp Premium | $4,200 | 4 onboarding sessions |
Klaviyo Email and Omnisend Pro both cost $1,800, but only the Omnisend row names free help. Mailchimp Premium costs $4,200 - $1,800 = $2,400 a year more than either one, and its onboarding sessions come with that higher price.
Omnisend’s free account expert comes with a spending line: $400 per month x 12 = $4,800 a year (Omnisend pricing). Omnisend Pro at 10,000 contacts ($1,800) falls $3,000 short of it. Omnisend Standard at 50,000 contacts ($4,956) clears it by $156.
For the same tools at 1,000 and 50,000 contacts, see the 12-month cost of Shopify email tools at 1k, 10k and 50k.
Help the email platforms include before you hire anyone: a free 5-day migration and four onboarding sessions
Omnisend’s pricing page offers a free 5-day migration that moves “your flows, lists, and templates”, plus 24/7 support. Mailchimp Premium includes 4 onboarding sessions.
So who pays for the move? If an agency quotes a fee to move your store onto Omnisend, compare it with the free migration first, and ask what the fee covers that the migration does not.
Both kinds of help have a limit. Four onboarding sessions are setup help, not someone running your flows and campaigns every month. A migration moves what you already have, and it happens once. And a 10,000-contact Pro account stays below the account-expert line worked out above.
Agencies have a weak spot too: the proof on agency lists can be the agency’s own word. The over $30 million in email revenue on Omnisend’s list is one agency’s own claim, and Thrive’s list puts Thrive itself at number 1. The fix: judge an agency on results in your own account. Keep the platform login and the list in your name, and ask for your Gmail spam rate every month (see the checks below).
So price the platform’s included help first. Hire an email marketing agency only for the ongoing work that help leaves out: someone running your flows and campaigns month after month. If all you need is the move, skip Premium: Omnisend offers the free migration, and its Pro plan costs the $1,800 shown in the table.
Who should skip hiring any agency: a store whose real job is a one-time move or a first setup. Use Omnisend’s free migration or Mailchimp Premium’s onboarding sessions instead. Come back to the agency question when you need someone sending every week.
Deliverability checks to ask any agency about: Gmail’s 0.30% spam line and DMARC alignment
Gmail’s sender guidelines say to keep the spam rate reported in Postmaster Tools below 0.30%. Postmaster Tools is where Google reports that rate. Senders of more than 5,000 messages a day to Gmail accounts must also set up SPF, DKIM and DMARC. These are records on your domain that prove your mail really comes from you.
For direct email, to pass DMARC alignment, your From: domain must match the SPF domain or the DKIM domain. A 10,000-contact list crosses that 5,000-a-day line only if enough of its addresses are at Gmail. Set up all three records anyway, so a growing list never catches you unprepared.
Ask these before you sign:
- Who sets up SPF, DKIM and DMARC on our domain?
- Which domain will our From: address line up with, the SPF domain or the DKIM domain?
- Who checks our spam rate in Postmaster Tools, and what changes if it moves toward 0.30%?
- Whose login owns the email platform account and the list, ours or yours?
- If you also run our ads, do the new subscribers land in our account?
If an agency cannot answer questions 1 to 3 on a first call, it is not ready to send email from your domain. The same Gmail rule anchors the CRM marketing platforms buyer’s checklist.
FAQ
Can one agency run both my email and my paid ads?
Some can. StudioForty9’s entry on Omnisend’s agency list covers Klaviyo email work plus pay-per-click ads and social media. Get the two costs quoted separately.
Is an email advertising firm the same as an email acquisition company?
Not by definition, but Email Vendor Selection says the “skills often fall together”. Ask whether a quote buys placements or new subscribers.
What are some popular email marketing platforms?
This site prices seven of them: Klaviyo, Omnisend, Mailchimp, MailerLite, Brevo, ActiveCampaign and Beehiiv. At 10,000 contacts, the cheapest row in the table is Brevo Starter and the most expensive is Mailchimp Premium.
Before you sign any agency quote, set it next to your platform’s row in the table. Then compare more agency and budget guides.
